Licensing & Standards (Alarms, CCTV, Access Control)

Those companies that both install and/or maintain alarm systems, CCTV and access control systems require a license from the PSA. Companies must have been found to meet the requirements of certain standards in order to obtain a PSA license.

The relevant standards are outlined below:

I.S. EN 50131-1:2006 – European Standard for Alarm systems – Intrusion and hold-up systems

The European Standard for alarm systems sets out the requirements for the design and installation of alarm systems.

To obtain a license for the installation of alarm systems from the Private Security Authority you must be audited by a Private Security Authority approved certification body.

SR 40 – Non-Technical Best Practice for the Provision of Electronic Security Services – Intruder Alarm, Access Control and CCTV Systems

SR40 is a quality management standard for installers of alarms, CCTV and access control systems that cover four broad areas relating to the operation of the business:

  1. Company Organisation
  2. Operations
  3. Staffing
  4. Training

To obtain a license for the installation of alarm systems, CCTV and Access Control Systems from the Private Security Authority, you must be audited against the requirements of SR40 by a Private Security Authority approved certification body.

Garda Policy on Monitored Intruder Alarms

Installers of security alarm systems must operate in line with the requirements of the Garda Alarm policy.
